‘Wear it pink’ for breast cancer research

MSPs are campaigning for widespread support for Breast Cancer Campaign‘s biggest fundraising event – Wear it Pink day.

One is Argyll’s Highlands and Islands MSP, Jamie McGrigor, who says: ‘Jamie says “It is estimated that there are over 41,000 women and 150 men alive in Scotland who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. I know many constituents who have lost friends and family members to the disease and would like to encourage everyone in the Highlands & Islands and throughout the country to support wear it pink on October 28, to raise valuable funds for breast cancer research.’

Another is Dave Thompson, constituency MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch and a central force in Scotland Food and Drink – which leads a flourishing industry sector promised additional support for exports in yesterdays spending review.

On Friday 28th  October 2011 supporters in schools, colleges and businesses throughout the country are encouraged to don an item of pink in support of Campaign – and each donate £2 to fund innovative world-class breast cancer research.

Last year hundreds of thousands of people took part in Wear it Pink to help improve survival rates for the one in eight women who experience breast cancer during their lifetime.

Mr Thompson, previously a Highlands and Islands MSP helpful to issues concerning Argyll and Bute, points out that while the disease mainly affects women, it is not gender specific:: ‘Every year in the UK, around 48,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women.

‘Although it is rare, men can also suffer from breast cancer, with around 340 men diagnosed each year.

‘I lost my own mother to breast cancer at the tender age of 22 and have lost other family members to the disease.

‘I would like to encourage everyone in Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch and throughout Scotland to support Wear it Pink on October 28, to raise valuable funds for breast cancer research.’

NOTE: Wear it Pink is supported by Vanish, which has committed to raising an incredible £250,000 for the charity this year.
