This afternoon (3rd August 2011) a Ranger at the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park found bones sticking out of the water on the northerly west shore of the loch, near Tarbet in Argyll.
The bones have been shown to be human but nothing more is yet known on their gender, age or whether there has been anything criminal involved.
It is impossible for this discovery not to call to mind the discovery over a decade ago of body parts in the loch on the east shore at Rowardennan – which turned out to belong to a teenager from Kilmarnock, Barry Wallace, who had been the victim of a horrifying murder and dismemberment by 47-year-old William Beggs who was found guilty of these crimes in 1999.
There is a local question as to whether this might be the as yet undiscovered body of Edinburgh woman, Suzanne Pilley, whose former lover, the married David Gilroy, remains charged with her murder. She disappeared from her workplace on 4th May 2010. Her body is thought to have been disposed of in Argyll and this location, just off the A82, would certainly be on the route to areas previously searched by police and mountain rescue teams.
Strathclyde police have set an investigation in train and say that it will take some time to discover more about the bones.

The gossip in the villages is that the discovery was in the shallow water off Tarbet pier. But the gossip was also that a whole body was found, so take that with a pinch of salt. Informed sources tell me there was an Unneccessary Helicopter hovering about. Men in suits. High drama. Frightened chickens.
Loch Lomond is big, and has been inhabited for a long time. I’m sure people disappear into it, accidentally or otherwise, over time, and not all of them will be reported missing, and some of them will re-emerge over time. My opinion, though, is that these bones will turn out to be historical or archaeological. Though take that with a pinch of salt…
