Mansfield Museum in Nottinghamshire were the worthy winners of this Award but Argyll’s Kilmartin Museum made its mark in being the only Scottish Museum shortlisted. They also got very positive feedback at the event from Dea Birkett, the Director of Kids in Museums, and from the Lessingham family who had visited all 6 shortlisted Museums.
Kilmartin was represented at the awards ceremony by Dr Sharon Webb, Museum Director and Curator, Kate Moody, Education Officer, John Fisher, Restaurant Manager and Chef and Anne Smart, Museum Administrator.
When Kilmartin House Museum were told that they were on the shortlist, Dea Birkett said: ‘Kilmartin proves that you don’t have to be a big, national, city centre museum to make a real difference. The judges were particularly impressed by its strong, loyal local following and sense of community and noted comments like, ‘We are very lucky to have them in this rural area’.
Kilmartin staff are now fired up to review and improve what they do with the objective of going one step further in 2012.

Great news for a fantastic resource for all, well done. Kilmartin Museum is beautiful, the staff have been fanatstic on our two visits there and the cafe is wonderful.
We would travel from Glasgow more often but there are no buses, what a tragedy for Scottish tourism and our ancient heritage
