A very major industry player who wishes Kintyre well and hopes to see the Skykon plant into healthy production under new management, is understood to feel:
- that the set up at the Skykon wind turbine tower manufacturing plant at Machrihanish, west of Campbeltown, is fantastic;
- that there is a very real risk that virtually rreplaceable machinery may be sold off by the administrators, Ernst and Young, in a pragmatic quick return for shareholder creditors.
The machinery in question is includes a rare cold rolling machine and several specialist welding machines capable of welding circular seams between tower sections.
It is to be hoped that the Scottish Government will find a route to protecting such specialised assets until enough time has been devoted to finding a new operator at the plant.

Good news today:
A joint venture between Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) and Marsh Wind Technology is close to buying the Skykon plant, in a move that could shore up the UK’s fragile offshore wind industry supply chain.
SSE confirmed today it has formed Wind Towers Ltd with Marsh Wind Technology, a subsidiary of US supply chain firm Marsh Global Holdings. The joint venture has been granted preferred bidder status by administrators Ernst & Young and is aiming to tie up an acquisition of Skykon’s plant in the next few weeks.
