Tonight’s (23rd September 2010) 6 o’clock news on BBC1 saw an extended clip on the World Stone Skimming Championship skipping the water on the slate quarries of Easdale Island this weekend.
Donald Melville, organiser of this spectacularly serendipitous event guided the reporter through the intricacies of choosing the right stone and an awesome local champion demonstrated the most effective way to throw it.
Islanders turned up to cheer when the reported gave it his best – and an enviably decent effort it was – eventually.
Sunday 26th September is the date in the 2010 calendar – but the action will have started in good Easdale fashion the night before. The uniquely beautiful island hall and the Puffer Bar will be alive with music, food and all sorts of the memorable nonsense and bonhomie that brings an international audience to the island each year- just to throw stones in the water.

Congratulations are surely due to Donald Melville for grabbing so much publicity for the Easdale Island Stone Skimming Championships that take place this Sunday. Two appearances last night on the TV and back again on Radio Scotland this morning.
This small community has an enviable record of getting things done and doing them well.
