Comment posted Argyll and Bute’s new council: First ‘term’ report by Graeme mccormick.
I don’t recall any of the previous administration out clearing the verges. Instead of complaining those who are able should cut the verges and brush the pavements outside their property. It can be very satisfying and good exercise.

This speculation is better than a laxative! - Argyll and Bute Council: Councillor McCuish leads again
There may have been a little localdifficulty but to suggest the SNP government aremuppets flies in factor opinion polls which give them a huge lead over the opposition in Holyrood. In discussions with several prominent supporters of the Union I have been surprised how fulsome they are their praise for the SNP government and in particular their admiration for John Swinney.
There must be a lot of muppets about!
- Radically new council group changes all the dynamics: party politics dead in Argyll
I think we might have more regard for them if they all said they would only take their basic councillor salary and forego the extra payments. All councillors should be part of the administration but have a free vote except for the appointment of lead councillors which should be divided up in proportion to the population share of each area committee.
That might just put a sort of break on factionalism

Serious stuff indeed! our young people’s future or half-empty care homes.Other areas are also worried about school closures being revisited.

Mean spirited and graceless sums up rather well the SNP council we now live under. When will the useful idiots who keep the minority SNP in power lift the scales from their eyes ?
On what is quite literally a life and death matter , this year is the poorest showing ever by the Council’s roads team with regards to road verge cutting . Many rural dwellers are living in great peril , having to connect to main roads out of junctions where no cutting has taken place at all this year. Some have resorted to DIY , but the poor and vulnerable , unable to fix the problem themselves are the losers . Shame on you Argyll and Bute SNP controlled Council .

Hard pressed council taxpayers are to spend their limited free time cutting road verges while the council spend our hard earned taxes employing spin doctors with generous salaries and pensions ? What next ? Empty our own dustbins, educate our children at home ?

Verge maintenance, autumn leave clearence, and weed control of footpaths and pavements are a thing of the past and no administration can be proud of this gradual neglect which leads to flooding problems, worse when freezing, and cracks to the roads and sidewalks, leading to costly remedial work. Surely a case of a stich in time…..

Between Graeme McCormick and Islay for Ever, there’s a real issue here.
The ‘Big Society’ notion is a follow on from Margaret Thatcher’s ‘Care in the Community’ swerve which sat alongside selling off the public services.
It’s all about passing back responsibilities to the private sector, to communities and to families.
This can work to a degree but would need local/community funding mechanisms.
The other side of this has to be lower taxes.
That means electoral agreement on what we do not need and/or do not want from central and local government; and what core services we must have centrally provided to a high level, pay for and have real leverage over where delivery is poor.

“Road verge cutting” does not describe what has happened along the Tarbert / Lochgilphead section of the A83 – ‘Vandalism’ is a better description of the work carried out by, I presume, the Council road team.
Destruction of bushes by some mechanical flail leaves us with a poor quality verge-scape.
BTW if the council road team was NOT responsible for this – my apologies. Is it down to Transport Scotland? Does anyone know?

Barmore 2: the A83 from Tarbet as far as Kennacraig is a government trunk road, and nothing to do with the council – unless their roads department has a contract to cut the verges, but I don’t believe so. Transport Scotland has contracted the management and maintenance of the road to Scotland Transerv – a joint venture between Balfour Beatty and Mouchel.
