Lochgilphead meeting to plan Armed Forces Day 2011

At a time when cuts to the defence budget directly threaten the existence of the historically resonant Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, folk in and around Lochgilphead wish to set up a group to help organise a big event for Armed Forces Week in 2011.

A meeting of all interested parties is to take place on Wednesday 1st September at 8 o’clock in Lochgilhead’s Campbell Street Centre.

Those interested in developing the event want it to involve and to be for everyone in Argyll and Bute but are appealing particularly to Lochgilphead residents to help take the initiative forwards as the town is the HQ of Argyll and Bute Council.

The intention is that the event will be family orientated, running over a week end if there is sufficient interest.

Confirmation is awaited of the dates for the 2011 Armed Forces Week. When these are known, final plans can be put in place.

The main Armed Forces Parade in 2011 is to be in Edinburgh, so the event here will be on the weekend before or after whatever date is settled for the Edinburgh parade.

Anyone interested in this initiative but unable to attend the inaugural meeting is asked to contact Betty Rhodick or Brian Christie:
