On Saturday 31st July the final of the Sutherland Cup, the senior and fabled competition in the sport of shinty, will be covered live on television through Gaelic channel, BBC ALBA.
This is the culmination of the season’s exclusive live coverage of shinty on BBC ALBA – from The Eilan in Newtonmore, with Lovat and Glenurquhart competing in a local derby for the Aberdein Considine Sutherland Cup.
Transmission on BBC ALBA starts at the throw-up time at 4.00pm and runs until 6.00pm.
Half time features will include an in depth interview with Scotland shinty manager, Drew McNeil, a catch up with Kilmallie Shinty Club, Fort William’s other shinty team, as well the legend, Ronald Ross, taking viewers through more skills of the sport.
Hugh Dan MacLennan, sports broadcaster, former shinty player ad the sports’ biographer, will be commentating live on the match, alongside sports writer and broadcaster Alex O’ Henley.
Alan Esslemont, Head of Content at BBC ALBA, says: ‘There has been a real appetite from viewers across Scotland for live shinty coverage with the great success of three live finals already broadcast. We very much look forward to Saturday’s local derby when Glenurquhart will battle it out against Lovat for the Sutherland Cup title – sure to make exciting viewing.
‘Sport is an important and popular element of our service programming and we are delighted to be supporting community and professional sports throughout the country, providing a platform for increased exposure on BBC ALBA’.
BBC ALBA is currently available on Digital Satellite, on Sky 168, Freesat 110 and live on BBC iPlayer. Ten hours of content per week is also available to view on demand via the BBC PC iPlayer and the BBC iPlayer on Cable.

You have a misprint in this – the date is Saturday 31st July, not 1st – though I guess most folk would figure it out
