The series of overdue road works currently being undertaken in Argyll by Transerv for Transport Scotland has led to Furnace Quarry doing a lot of night shifts to meet the demand for road stone.
This has led to a procession of heavy lorries coming through the village at all hours of the day and night.
It has also meant more frequent and seemingly more robust shot firings at the quarry, shaking the foundations of houses across the village.
Given the general need for the roadworks to be done and its good relationship with Ennstone Thistle, the Furnace community had accepted that periods of night working would be necessary.
However, the most recent period has been lengthy and noisy – and even more frequent night shifts are anticipated as Transerv is increasing the level of late night working and road closures.
There is a public meeting on the situation in Furnace Village Hall at 6.30pm on Thursday 22nd July. Representatives of Transerv and Ennstone Thistle, the quarry operator, will be present.
Everyone from any of the communities affected is welcome to attend and to contribute to the discussion. This is participatory democracy in action and such opportunities need to be taken up.
