Scottish Water sends water tankers to Tobermory amid drought fears

As Scottish Water sends tankers with 80,000 gallons of water to Tobermory, the main town on Mull, it says that it is actively considering applying for drought orders.

This follows a six month period which the company describes as seeing the lowest level of rainfall in the UK since 1964.

The areas most affected are Mull, Dumfries and Galloway and Ayrshire.

Mull’s problems arise from the prevalence of the private water supplies which are a feature of rural life and which are drying up. The water brought in by ferry on the tankers is being used to top up the mains supply to Tobermory.

Businesses affected in removing accommodation from public availability during the shortage include a holiday cottage letting company and a hotel.

Should drought orders be necessary, they would mean water rationing controlled by Scottish Water.
