Long-awaited road resurfacing work worth more than £820,000 is about to get going on Mull, Islay and Jura.
The tender has been won by Ennstone Thistle Ltd and work is programmed to start on Mull before the end of June. The resurfacing on Islay and Jura will be done once the Mull projects have been completed.
The locations and budgets of each scheme are:
- Mull: A849 Kintra (£90,000)
- Mull: A849 Pennyghael (£75,000)
- Mull: C46 Glenbellart (£75,000)
- Mull: B8073 Tobermory to Dervaig (£250,000).
- Jura: A846 North of Craighouse (£70,000).
- Islay: A846 Shore Street, Bowmore (£129,000)
- Islay: B8016 Bowmore to Port Ellen (High) Road (£135,000).
With the now legendary Mull potholes in mind, Councillor Duncan MacIntyre, Argyll and Bute’s spokesperson for Transportation and Infrastructure, welcomed the news, saing: ‘These projects are those which the council viewed as being of the greatest priority.
‘I am aware that local residents have been keen to see something done about these particular sections of road for some time, and I am delighted that work is about to start on them.
‘We’d like to apologise in advance for any disruption caused by the works, which will of course be kept to an absolute minimum.
‘Any delays will be kept to a maximum of 20 minutes at any one time and, where available, diversionary routes will be well signposted’.
Offering some further reassurance to the Argyll isalnds – whose roads are generally in very poor condition, Councillor MacIntyre says: ‘The council’s roads operations team will of course be carrying out further general maintenance work throughout the year, as resources allow, on roads throughout the islands’.

The resurfacing for Islay and Jura could well be delayed due to the current ferry problems. There is more info here: http://blog.islayinfo.com/article.php/possible-ferry-problems-islay-travellers
