Scottish Water response to fine over Campbeltown Sewage works

At Campbeltown Sheriff Court this week Scottish Water faced a case related to its project to upgrade the town’s sewage system. The outcome of this case, which For Argyll reported, was a fine of £2,500 for the company.

Perhaps the most telling judgment was the Area Procurator Fiscal for Argyll and Clyde, John Watt’s statement as he imposed the fine.

He said: ‘The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service recognises the impact that environmental crime has on Scotland’s rich and diverse natural heritage and views these crimes seriously’.

A spokesman for Scottish Water now says: ‘Scottish Water takes its environmental responsibilities very seriously. We have recently started the fifth and final phase of our improvements to Campbeltown’s waste water network.

‘This will take Scottish Water’s investment in all phases of the improvement work in Campbeltown to about £26m.

‘When this work is complete, it will substantially reduce the chances of such incidents recurring’.
