Yesterday (14th May) the 17 youngsters at Kilchrenan Primary School raised the mighty sum of £191 for the Oban Lifeboat by running a Coffee and Tea Afternoon for their small community.
After a hugely enjoyable and informative visit to the RNLI’s Oban Lifeboat the pupils were so impressed that, under the guidance of Headmaster Graham Dickie and Teacher Julie Watson, they set about raising money to support the boat.
You can guess the amount of preparation that went into the afternoon.
Then, on the day, each pupil each had duties to do, ranging from welcoming the visitors to serving the tea, coffee and cakes and to manning the table of souvenirs for sale.
At the event, Willie Melville, former crew member of Oban Lifeboat and author of the history of Oban Lifeboat, the best selling book Waterstones in Oban has had in its trading history, explained the proper use and maintenance of lifejackets to the boys and girls.
Then they added up their takings – with the total of £191 an incredible figure from such a small country school.
It is this sort of community effort that underlines the local respect for the Lifeboat and its crew; and the fund raising efforts that help to maintain an essential rescue service run by volunteers.
