WalkIslay 2010 is already afoot. Starting yesterday (10th April) and running until 16th April, it weaves its way through Islay and its neighbouring island of Jura. This year there is also a visit to the third island in the chain – Colonsay, with its satellite island of Oronsay across a causeway.
There are beach walks and inland walks. There are sand dunes and bog to be negotiatied. There are natural rock formations and historical features of the islands to be seen – with a look at some cutting edge renewable energy initiatives on Islay, like the wave generation station.
There is a ‘Welcome to Visitors’ evening with local traditional musicians and some traditional food – like clootie dumpling.
The walking is serious, daily and varied. This is a fabulous event, fully tuned in to Argyll’s greatest resources – it’s physical nature – and the many and varied opportunities this offers for activity tourism.
An illustrated schedule for the walks is available to download from the WalkIslay website – and the organisers pretty well guarantee that it’s free of midges. (It’s too early in the season for the little nibblers.)
