Here’s the scenario of a postapocalyptic sci-fi drama, Mission 2110, filmed in Argyll on the Maersk container ships laid up in Loch Striven and on course to rocket on to the CBBC schedules in early May.

A breed of robots – Roboidz, created as benevolent beings, have turned to the dark side and taken over the world. There are almost no human being left.

The Roboidz’ floating base, Future Gate, is impentrable, heavily defended against any possible attack by the few humans left standing.

One man has somehow managed to penetrate Future Gate. Caleb, whose mother created the Roboidz and who remotely guides his last-ditch attempt to save the world, hides amid the laboratories, workshops and production lines – the Roboidz are building more of themselves. He wages a war against them.

He can’t do it alone. He has a small force of young people ported from one bundred years earlier, 2010, imbued with the values of a green and humane universe now long gone.

They must help to defeat the deadly Roboidz and discover that the only way is to find and steal the bio-rods that are the enemy’s vital fuel source. When they have enough bio-rods, they will have the power to shut down their evil empire.

They don’t just have to avoid being caught by the terrifying Roboidz. There are also the Shades. These are zombies, mindless workers serving the Roboidz in an unknown project deep below the floating complex that is their base on Earth.

In a series of challenges, the recruits battle the immense mechanical monsters with all their cunning, guile and intelligence. those who lose are vaporised. Can they succeed? Watch and learn.

In an inspired marketing move, Mission: 2110 will run alongside a parallel blood-relative of a creation – an online game. This wll be available on a website combining interactive narrative with the game.

Players will be able to join Caleb’s resistance team in collecting the mission-critical bio-rods and uncovering the secrets of Mission: 2110. Gaining access to the Cycon Archive, players can delve into Caleb’s mysterious past and discover how the Roboidz came to take over the planet.

The 13-episode series was written by Phil Ford (of Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures) and is voiced by award-winning actress Lindsay Duncan. Prosthetic and costume specialists, Millennium FX (of Doctor Who and The Day Of The Triffids), were responsible for the creation of the characters driving this terrifying mechanical universe.

Given the start of transmission in early May, it may be that Caleb’s team from 2010 got out in good time. We have our own Roboidz – and Shades – to combat.
