Machrihanish golf course in Independent’s World Top 50

Great to see Argyll’s golfing opportunities flagged up amongst the best in the world by a national newspaper.

The Independent published a list of the Top 50 Golf Courses – across Great Britain and Ireland, Europe and the rest of the world.

The top 15 were in the Great Britain and Ireland section, in which Scotland had 6, England 5 and Ireland 4.

In at No 15 was Machrihanish – the Old Tom Morris designed course on the Mull of Kintyre, playing since 1876 and described as having ‘one of the best opening hoes in golf, along the Beach and requiring a drive over the Atlantic’. And in case that wasn’t enough, the article notes: ‘The rest isn’t bad either’.

In Scotland terms, this list puts Machrihanish in a bracket with St Andrews Old Course (No 1); Turnberry (No 3); Muirfield (No 5); Carnoustie (No 9); and Kingsbarns (No 11).

We’ll settle for that. Next time the adjoining and innovatory Machrihanish Dunes Course, designed by David McLay Kidd, may be up there as well.

Golf rocks in Argyll – and with Loch Lomond Seaplanes to launch their Golf Express service to the Machrihanish courses, Loch Lomond and Machrie on Islay, golf flies as well.
