BBC Radio Scotland: programme on Black Watch in Afghanistan

At 11.30am on Monday 26th April, BBC Radio Scotland is airing a programme: Black Watch, 3 Scots: A war in their own words.

This recounts the experiences in this ongoing war of soldiers in the Black Watch, once a regiment now the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

The Black Watch is publishing, in the autumn of 2010. a book with first-hand accounts of life on the frontline in Afghanistan. This programme is based on that book.

The battalion, based at Fort George east of Inverness, undertook a six-month tour of duty in the country last year, its first deployment to that theatre of war.

Five soldiers lost their lives – one of them the young Corporal Robert McLaren from near Bunessan in the Ross of Mull.

30 others were wounded in action and 51 were evacuated back to the UK.
