Results: Scottish Cup Open Knockdown Karate Tournament

In a first for Lochgilphead, spectators were treated to plenty of action during some great fights (including knockouts) at the Mid Argyll Sports Centre in Lochgilphead on Saturday 6th March during the first Scottish Cup Open Knockdown Karate Tournament.

In an action packed afternoon, fighters from clubs in Edinburgh, Perth, Oban and Lochgilphead fought in middle and heavyweight categories for the title of Scottish Cup Champion.

During the course of the afternoon two young members from the local club, Robbie McDougall and Katie MacDonald gave a demonstration of kata and basic karate moves. Sensei Iain Rodger from Kyokushin Schools of Karate (KSK) Scotland and Shihan Wullie Rodger of Senshi Do Kickboxing  also took part in a tile breaking demonstration.

All the participants thoroughly enjoyed the day. They are now looking forward to meeting up in further competitions around Scotland and also to taking part in next year’s tournament. The results on the day were:

Heavyweight
1.    Paul Williams: IKO1 Perth
2.    Simon Smart: KSK Oban
3.    Iain Potter: KSK Oban

Middleweight:
1.    Bartosz Silski: IKK Kyokushin-kan Edinburgh
2.    Danny MacMillan: Muay Thai Lochgilphead
3.    Patryk Koszyk: IKO1 Perth

A special fight was arranged on the day between two young up and coming fighters, the result was:
1.    Eamon Cramb: IKO1 Perth
2.    Mark Welsh: KSK Oban

Spirited Fighter award:
Slawomir Fligiel: IKK Kyokushin-kan Edinburgh

Trophies were sponsored by S MacDonald Builders of Tarbert in Kintyre.

And another martial arts achievment – in Ju-Jitsu

Sensei Andy Russell from Tobermory on Mull  – who has been in Ju-Jitsu for over 45 years – is now the highest registered Amateur Martial Arts Instructor in Scotland. He has achieved the 8th Dan Black Belt in the sport.

A former world champion himself, Andy has trained world champions and saw his junior club world champions in 2004 when they took the gold medal in Canada.

The Executive and Technical Committee of Ju-Jitsu has also awarded Sensei Andy Russell the great honour of ‘Professor of Martial Arts’.
