Lights off at Oban’s McCaig’s Tower for WWF Earth Hour

Argyll and Bute Council is planning a dramatic gesture in support of the World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour on Saturday 27th March: from 8,30pm-9.30pm.

Unless there are objections, it is to switch off the lights on Oban’s crowning folly, McCaig’s Tower for the hour.

Sustainable Oban thought of this and contacted the Council to ask if it might be possible – only to discover that the Council was already on the ball and ahead of the game.

The response was: ‘McCaig Tower lighting switch off for WWF Earth Hour has already been identified within Argyll and Bute Council as a good awareness raising opportunity. Assuming no objections from other stakeholders, then this is expected to proceed’.

Sustainable Oban is suggesting that everyone thinks about lights that could safely be switched off during Earth Hour – perhaps like lights in community buildings during the daytime, for example – and not just on 27th March?

One Response to Lights off at Oban’s McCaig’s Tower for WWF Earth Hour

  1. A worthy cause and one I support however I hope that A&B is achieving this hours darkness using a timer and not paying someone a couple of hours overtime. Austere times.

Wonder why I even bother posting here – never get a reply or even an acknowledgement from staff.
