A young seaman, Matthew Webster, shot himself aboard HMS Hurworth at her berth in Faslane on Saturday 20th February.
He was only 23 years old and his job on the Hurworth required him to be armed.
No reason has been given for his action.
This is the second shooting incident at Faslane, the UK’s nuclear submarine base, within 8 days – although an infinitely the more serious.
On Friday 12th February, as we reported, two members of the naval staff at the base were detained by Ministry of Defence Police before being handed over to Royal Navy Police following reports of shots near the accommodation block. An air rifle was later found in a room in the block.
