Seil Natural History Group field trip in Glen Gallain

The always active Seil Natural History Group – must partly be why it has an astonishingly large membership (over 100) – is off on its February midweek field trip on Tuesday 23rd – in Glen Gallain, led by Carl Farmer.

New would-be members are welcome to join them – but expect a slow and closely observed walk as the purpose of the Group’s midweek field trips is on recording and photographing what is found..

Meeting instructions

Meet at 9.30 am at a parking place on the A816, 3/4 mile south of the Scammadale road end. Coming south from Oban, pass the Scammadale road end and then look out for a blue P sign indicating parking 1/4 mile, and then another P sign at the actual parking place, on your left. There is room for several cars well away from the road. (Grid ref = NM84951874.) Pool cars where possible.

What you’ll see

Carl Farmer says that walkers will be exploring a wood which has wonderful old hazels dripping with Lobarion lichens, the sort of place you might find Hazel Gloves although he didn’t see any on a quick recce, but reckons that the group should see Yellow Specklebelly and, if it’s really lucky, Tinned Apricots. (No packed lunch necessary then?)

He says: ‘There’s also a lot of birch in the wood to give us the acid-loving lichens so we should get a good total. I still haven’t seen a spring flower in the wild this year, and there’s a free lunchtime pint to the first person to spot one on this outing. Things that flower year-round like daisies don’t count. Normally by this time of year a few Primroses, Celandines and Barren Strawberry have opened their eyes but all the frost we’ve had is keeping everything well back.’

The Group’s regular walks and field trips are the best possible introduction to the area’s wildlife and biodiversity and to the are itself. The guided walks take people to places they would not otherwise have got to know – and Carl’s offer of a free pint at lunchtime to the first to spot a spring flower in the wild should improve concentration.
