Award-winning Gaelic singer, TV presenter and Gaelic journalist, Joy Dunlop will take the wraps off Dùsgadh (Awakening) at a launch event – featuring a live performance – at February’s ‘Ceol’s Craic’ at Glasgow’s Centre for Contemporary Arts, on Saturday 27th February 2010.
From Taynuilt, Joy Dunlop ran Helensburgh’s Eilidh Steel the closest of seconds in the Best Achievement for Argyll Award in the ForArgyll Awards 2009, is this weekend delivering on a promise – to launch her debut album.
The sensational new album, co-produced with Barry Reid (of Celtic bands Treacherous Orchestra and Croft No 5) will be released on Joy’s own record label Sradag Music. The tracks on the album reflect her experience, passion and inspiration as a young Gaelic singer living and working in the West Coast of Scotland. She combines her many years of exposure to Scotland’s rich Gaelic heritage with a young, trendy, modern image.
Dr Anne Lorne Gillies, Gaelic Ambassador 2010 says: ‘Joy has done much to promote the Gaelic language on both sides of the Atlantic. This thoughtful and engaging album reminds us that she is above all a talented singer. Her voice has the clarity of a violin; her style is sincere and expressive.’
The album features an eclectic array of musicians and draws on a wide range of influences in its blending of pure, haunting vocals and luscious musical arrangements.
With talents ranging from singing and dancing to television presenting and award-winning Gaelic journalism, Joy Dunlop has more strings to her bow than most. A multiple prize-winning Gaelic singer and popular international performer, she combines Gaelic development work with regular media stints and is a former Inter-Celtic Dance Champion.
She performs regularly in Scotland and abroad as a solo and a collaborative artist. 2010 will see her touring with material from Dùsgadh in the UK and abroad.
For Argyll is certainly aware of the strength of her public support following the massive online vote she attracted in our end of year awards.
