Good to be able to pass on insider perspectives on good people doing good work - particularly in Argyll’s neglected cultural sector.
One of Argyll’s most respected and best known musicians, Donald Shaw from Taynuilt, is also known across the world for the work he does annually in putting together the everĀ more successful and massive programme for Celtic Connections, the great winter music festival in Glasgow.
Gordon Maclean, Director of An Tobar, the arts centre in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, is just back from a gig – the An Tobar sessions – at the Royal Concert Hall in the festival programme.
He emailed us to say: ‘The night went really well and there were lots of people from Mull in the audience too. Celtic Connections is such an amazing festival and of course led by Argyll’s own Donald Shaw!
‘I saw Donald a couple of times when I was there – he really does try and catch a bit of every show. Don’t think he gets much sleep in January!’
Look at the number of shows in the Celtic Connections programme. Imagine what it takes just to get the overall show on the road – and here’s Donald Shaw still working his way around every show on the card, experiencing each for himself and showing the performers attention and respect. Class act.

I too would like to commend the ubiquitous Donald Shaw who not only gives superb entertainment with Capercaillie but is to be found helping, encouraging and promoting young musicians in so many varied activities in Argyll and across Scotland. Someone who genuinely puts far more into the Scottish Musical scene that he takes out!
