There’ll be shades, bling and darlings galore in Bowmore if this one comes off. Islay High School’s entry – ‘An Tùr’ (The Tower) – in FilmG, MG ALBA’s exciting online digital shorts competition is up for a major national award.
They – and we – have not got too long to wait. The winners will be announced at the FilmG awards ceremony on Friday 5th February in the Eden Court Theatre, Inverness.
Joe Thomas of the Inbetweeners (pictured above) is to be guest presenter at the ceremony. He stars as Simon Cooper in the BAFTA nominated British sitcom, about a group of teenage friends struggling through sixth form at school. Appropriately, Joe will present the Best Drama / Comedy award.
After receiving an outstanding number of entries in this year’s competition, judges have now announced the shortlist of finalists in each category. All shortlisted finalists can be viewed on the FilmG website.
And you can make your own award. Online viewers are now voting for their favourite film and the highest scoring will be presented with the prestigious People’s Choice award.
Islay High School’s An Tùr (The Tower) has been shortlisted in the Young People Award category for best production.
This short drama/comedy tells the story of a girl who is dreaming in class of a tower and sees her friend walk into it. The teacher wakes her up sharply and from then on dream and reality weave a fabric of challenge and heroism. See it for yourself here on the FilmG site.
Entries this year have not only come from Scotland and the UK but from Canada and the USA. Take your pick form the creative ideas, with ghost stories, animations, action and adventure – all on this year’s set theme of Gaisgeach – Hero, Warrior or Champion.
The awards cover three film genres: Drama/Comedy; Factual; and Entertainment – in both the Adult and Young People’s sections.
Donald Campbell, Chief Executive of MG ALBA, says: ‘I have been extremely impressed with the level of creative talent and entries in this year’s FilmG competition. It was open to everyone over the age of 12 to make 3-5 minute short films in Gaelic. Non Gaelic speakers and learners were particularly encouraged to get involved and have fun with the language. Our priority is to help develop creative talent and the final shortlisted entries offer a selection of imaginative interpretations of the theme ‘Gaisgeach’. I would like to thank everyone who participated this year and wish the pupils from Islay High School the very best of luck’.
The FilmG Awards ceremony taking place at Eden Court, Inverness on Friday 5 February 2010 will be presented by BBC ALBA presenters Fiona Mackenzie and Calum Macaulay with guest presenter Joe Thomas. A night of celebrations will include screenings of the winning films and live entertainment from BBC ALBA Rapal winners, Niteworks, with special guests.

I’m afraid you’re a bit late with this entry, at least for one part of it:
“And you can make your own award. Online viewers are now voting for their favourite film and the highest scoring will be presented with the prestigious People’s Choice award.”
The voting closed more than a week ago on the 15th of Jan.
Still, a great achievement for the group, fingers crossed they will do well in both the People’s Choice Award as well as in the Best Production category!
