BBC Alba highlights naked peat cutting

You’d better believe it. This is a programme that should warn people not to try this themselves at home.

The phenomenon is featured by a BBC Alba programme going out a week todah – on Monday 25th January at 9.00pm in the Trusadh/Compelling Stories series: Jock – Naked Peat.

It may not be either as dangerous or as titillating as some might hope – but it’s all down to the huge success of North Yorkshire’s Rylstone and District Women’s Rural Institute’s Calendar Girls.

This enterprise has spawned more imitations among the charity fund raising fraternity than you could shake a turf spade at – and this is the clue.

Retired metropolitan police officer Jock Murray, driven by illness within his own immediate family, chose the theme of traditional methods of producing winter fuel for his very unique Hebridean Peat-Cutters calendar.

Sadists will probably enjoy the cold, windswept backdrop.

BBC ALBA is available on Sky channel 168, Freesat channel 110 and live on BBC iplayer.

  2. So, this is what Kintyre1 gets up to when he is not blaming the nasty Nats for all the world’s ills including the four horsemen of the apocalypse.
