Argyll Roads update

7th January 2010: Argyll and Bute Council gritters are, of necessity, focusing on keeping open the main arterial roads.

While Argyll has not had the snow experienced elsewhere across Scotland and the UK as a whole, it has had persistently low temperatures which keep ice hazards high on the probability list.

All main roads are open but a number of  secondary routes have had to be closed because of sheet ice. Council gritters are currently unable to get to these locations to treat them.

On Mull, the B8073 road between Ensay and Kilninian near Calgary and also the C46 Glen Bellart road between Salen and Dervaig are both closed.

The Council is doing all it can in very difficult circumstances to get these roads open as soon as possible.

Pavements and many side roads remain treacherous and will be treated when resources permit. Pedestrians, cyclists and drivers are advised to take all possible care, to concentrate as they move around, to use speeds appropriate to circumstances and to avoid being short of time and forced to hurry.

Councillor Duncan MacIntyre, the Transportation Spokesperson, has thanked the winter maintenance staff who are at the sharp end of the work to keep Argyll moving. He praised their continued input during some of the worst weather the area has had in 30 years.

‘I wish to personally thank the staff for their significant input at this time. Indeed, the co-operation from the public is also appreciated and we hope this will continue.  The poor weather conditions are going to continue and I would ask that all drivers and pedestrians take care at this time’.
