The 2010 Scottish Education Awards have just been launched by Education Minister, Michael Russell. They are designed to recognise and celebrate success and excellence in education.

Look around you, at your local education services and the people who provide them and make sure that good work does not go unacknowledged. Nominate local schools, nurseries or individuals and nominate them as soon as possible.

You’ll find information and nomination procedures on the Scottish Education Awards website. Nominations close on 5th March but do it now.

Argyll and Bute won two of the main categories in the 2009 awards:

  • Oban High School’s principal teacher of mathematics, John Mackenzie, received major recognition in the Lifetime Achievement Award
  • Kilcreggan Primary School won the CBI Schools for All award.

Argyll’s success was underlined by two other shortlistings for major awards: Kilmartin Primary School teacher Simone McAdam in the Teacher of the Year category; and Dunoon Grammar School in the Homecoming Scotland category.

Launching the search for the stars of 2010, Mr Russell said: ‘There is fantastic work going on in schools the length and breadth of Scotland and many achievements that should be recognised and celebrated.

‘This could be an innovative way of helping learners develop core skills such as literacy, or imaginative projects to teach pupils about issues such as enterprise or climate change.

‘The Scottish Education Awards are about finding, highlighting and praising the success of staff, pupils and schools across 15 different key areas’.

The Awards 2010 are open to all publicly funded schools, including secondary, primary, nursery and special schools.  There are also categories which recognise the contributions of teachers, headteachers and support staff.

The 15 award categories are:

  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Getting Scotland Active
  • Literacy and Numeracy Across Learning
  • Enterprise and Employability Across Learning (Primary and Early Years)
  • Enterprise and Employability Across Learning (Secondary)
  • Entrepreneurial Learning
  • Aiming High
  • Sustainable Schools
  • Global Citizenship
  • Learning through Technology
  • Educational Supporter of the Year
  • Probationary Teacher of the Year
  • Teacher of the Year
  • Headteacher of the Year
  • Lifetime Achievement

After nominations close on 5th March, a panel of judges will choose finalists in each category.  Judges will visit each of the finalists during the judging process before deciding on a winner for each category.

Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Glasgow on 18th June 2010.
