Lorn Environmental Action Forum  – a LEAF bursting into bloom in December, is clearly no deciduous growth.

At a meeting in Oban on 3rd December a range of environmental groups and interested individuals decided to act collectively in making the voice of environmental concern heard.

They have agreed to form a loose confederation – LEAF – which will bring them together to mature and present a shared wisdom.

Many of the groups concerned are impressive in their own right in terms of the high level expertise they can bring to bear on the work they do. Together they will be immeasureably stronger. The emergence of LEAF is a significant development.

In what has the potential to be the most positive development of all, the meeting was also attended by some fishermen’s representatives – creating the opportunity for all perspectives on the matter of a possible marine protection area to contribute to a mutually informing debate – which will be developed over time.

Any broad church  organisation as this may become, has the greatest chance of making a real difference. Existing under the same umbrella and engaging with each other means that those who earn their living in the marine environment and those also alive to the complex needs of conservation will learn from each other.

This is a highly constructive initiative and all concerned in it are to be congratulated.

Richard Wesley of the Seil Natural History Group, who was one of those instrumental in bringing about this initial exploratory session, has thanks everyone who came.

He says: ‘I would like to thank everyone who attended the meeting at the Caledonian Hotel on Thursday evening to discuss the formation of an environmental action forum for the area. I would also like to express my appreciation for your participation and agreement that we should move forward with this proposal.

‘There was a good mix of representation across the board which produced some lively discussion, even at this early stage.  I hope this enthusiasm can be carried forward into the new year when we will be holding our next meeting on Thursday 7th January 2010. The venue and time will be announced shortly and everyone should receive notification by email.

‘I have created a new Yahoo Group forum to which you will all be invited to be a member. Please join and give yourself the opportunity to post messages, add files, links, photos and database information. Once the website ForArgyll is giving us is up and running after Christmas, all this information will be directly linked’.
