(Updated 17th December, below) With gloom pervading the country over the commercially suicidal proposed strike by BA staff, Argyll and Bute Councillor Ron Simon, Chair of the Councils Economy PPG has come up with the perfect solution.
He issued an invitation today to those facing an uncertain holiday period. The message is very simple – come to Argyll.
‘With potentially a million flights affected, many people are now having to rethink their holiday plans. I have today contacted Visit Scotland to ask them to put their PR machine into action to ensure that everyone is aware of what Scotland has to offer this winter, particularly the experiences and assets here in Argyll
‘It is unfortunate that so many people have had their plans affected by the proposed strike action but I am sure that the Argyll experience can more than make up for their disappointment.
‘I have also contacted the Minister for Tourism to request that the Scottish Government extend the invitation that a warm welcome awaits.
‘I am sure that the Scottish Business Community would appreciate any efforts to increase visitor numbers over the holiday period. Even in adversity, we should recognise opportunity and grasp it.’
Pretty well anything except a winter tan is possible in Argyll. Contact us via this website and we’ll tell you about it.
And click on ‘Visit Argyll’ at the top of this screen, then choose ‘This is Argyll’ from the menu on that page – and go play.
Update 17th December: With the ballot which decided the BA cabin crew strike now ruled illegal by the High Court, Christmas flights are now back on and, depending how long you plan to stay away, you may even get back home again.
But don’t forget the stress you’ve suffered.
Next time, plan ahead and come to Argyll. You’ll always get here somehow and if you talk to us beforehand we’ll give you all sorts of information that will make you a temporary insider.

Well, nice idea, but doesn’t really help if you’ve got an elderly relative living abroad who can’t come over to the UK and you’d like to visit him.

For Armin: Absolutely right, Armin. Nothing excuses BA staff for their irresponsibility in this action. They have jobs where many do not. They are significantly privileged in pay and conditions in relation to the staffs of other airlines. They get poor customer satisfaction reports for their self-satisfction. They would seem to have morphed into turkeys just in time to vote for the demise of their employed – for whom we will not mourn.
But people will have to make last minute changes of plan and, as a fellow advocate for Argyll, you know the breadth of choice available here in very special experiences and warm welcomes.
