Call for Rothesay to engage in town centre regeneration

Today’s corporate word is ‘consultation’. You can either get bored and cynical about it – for which you might have good reason – or you can get involved, take it over and make it work for you.

This is the only way to go. If you are offered inclusion in any process – take it and make it real. People are a force to be reckoned with.

Residents of Rothesay and its surrounding area, including local businesses and visitors to Bute, are to be consulted on the plans to regenerate the town centre – the Rothesay Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI)

Argyll and Bute Council is running a consultation period from 11th January to 8th February 2010 on two documents which are vital to the town’s future development:

  • Conservation Area Appraisal – looking at the way the town centre has evolved and commenting on its character and appearance today.
  • Conservation Area Management Plan - highlighting any issues or pressures which the town faces and proposing potential actions to meet these challenges.

The documents are said to be designed to be read by householders, business owners, planners and developers to ensure that only positive change happens within the town centre conservation area. (Let’s hope they’re as free as possible from corporate wonk-speak and acronyms they know and we don’t.)

When the final versions are fully adopted, these documents will support the policies of the Local Development Plan by becoming Supplementary Planning Guidance.

The documents will also inform the development stage of the Rothesay Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) and will be available to view online.

During the consultation period. hard copies will be available to read at:

  • Rothesay library
  • Eaglesham House, Mountpleasant Road.

Comments are welcomed either online or in writing to the Council offices at Eaglesham House or in person at the Take Time event in the town on Wednesday, 27th January – an opportunity to learn more about the conservation area and the Rothesay THI.

The documents will form part of an exhibition stand at this event, which will run from 11.00am to 3.30pm in Rothesay’s Pavilion.
