First Minister, Alex Salmond, has established the practice of asking one of his favourite artists each year to create and donate an artwork for his official Christmas card, which will be auctioned to benefit Scottish charities.

This year, Mary’s Meals, based in Dalmally, is one of the four selected charities to benefit from Gerard Burns painting, A New Journey, the image for the 2009 card.

There is another Argyll connection with the First Minister’s Christmas card tradition – he began it in 2007 with a painting by Argyll artist, John Lowrie Morrision (JoLoMo), Winter Falls On Linlithgow Palace. Along with the sale of a limited number of signed prints, this raised around £14,000.

The other three charities chosen to benefit in 2009 are CLIC Sargent, Glasgow the Caring City, and J-A-C-K (Joining Against Cancer In Kids) Foundation.
