Argyll & Bute Conservatives light candle for General Election advent

The annual Christmas Gathering of the Scottish Conservative party in Argyll and Bute heard its candidate in the forthcoming General Election, Councillor Gary Mulvaney declare that: ‘Only the Conservatives can deliver change in Britain and in Argyll & Bute’.

The pre-campaign has been under way for some time, with the various parties canvassing and judiciously raising the profile of their respective candidates around the constituency.

Seizing the opportunity to lay down some key positions at his party’s gathering on Helensburgh, Gary Mulvaney said: ‘Britain faces an enormous challenge to clear up Labour’s mess and the work needs to start straight away.

‘Only David Cameron and the Conservatives can get Gordon Brown out of Downing Street.

‘The SNP and Lib Dem can’t form a British Government, so it is straight choice between going for change with the Conservatives or facing another 5 years of Labour.

‘In Argyll & Bute, we have had the Lib Dems for over 20 years, and that has left us on the political fringes.

‘It’s time we had a change and influence where it matters most’.

Gary Mulvaney’s ‘bring it on’ attitude may, according to recent predictions in the national media, possibly get its reward. The suggestion is that Gordon Brown may go for an election date in late March, rather than the date of May 6th which Tessa Jowell inadvertently confirmed in a television chat on the night of the Euro elections in June.

We italicised the word ‘possibly’ above as a cautionary reminder. ‘Prudence’ may have been shown to have been irresponsibly distant from Brown’s performance as Chancellor of the Exchequer but a more risk averse creature where his own interests are concerned would be hard to find.

If he does go for an early election, it will be Peter Mandelson’s hand up his back.

Either way, Mulvaney seems to be spoiling for a fight.
