‘A forest is for life, not just for Christmas’,  says the Kilfinan Community Forest Company. This neat twist on another misunderstood acquisition launched the company’s limited edition charity Christmas Card, helping to raise vital funds to buy a community woodland, just behind the village in Tighnabruaich.

Michaela Hunter, Secretary of the group, puts an intersting perspective on this.

She says: ‘Many people have all that they wish for at Christmas time’ – seing this as a very good reaosn for such people to think of helping to found a devellpemnt of enduring community value.

Tighnabruaich Fundraising Christmas Card‘We believe this Charity Christmas Card will help everyone to contribute a little or a lot towards this community woodland and therefore a future for our parish.

‘We would urge everyone with a local connection to this area to consider supporting this very worthwhile community initiative’.

Buying a card will credit a donation to you before Christmas and the card will be sent to your nominated friend or family before 21st December 2009.

The cards – the minimum donation is £10 – can be previewed online or at the Tighnabruaich Gallery (01700 811681).

All proceeds will help contribute towards the community woodland – and the community are already over half way towards raising the full £130,000 they need to have by the end of March 2010.

It aims to buy 125 hectares of forest behind Tighnabruaich, with the intention of creating a sustainable community development of the woodland, delivering jobs, training, leisure and recreational initiatives, as well as woodfuel, allotments and timber products from the forest.

The overall aim is to bring economic stability, social cohesion and environmental sustainability for this rural community now and into the future.

Read For Argyll’s earlier feature on this imaginative and far-sighted project – and buy the cards. You can see above that they look good as well as doing good.
