Tourism Minister and Argyll’s MSP, Jim Mather, is delighted to see the total of £250,00 of support from VisitScotland’s Growth Fund now gained by tourism marketing projects in Argyll.

Launched in 2008 the Growth Fund, financed in part by the EU,  has awarded £670,000 to tourism groups across Scotland, producing a total of  £1.24 million in marketing spend.

Jim Mather sees this as: ‘… excellent  news for Argyll & Bute. There is clear evidence of innovative group marketing projects gaining valuable match funding here. No less than 17% of the national pot has been secured to date by businesses or projects based in or having a substantial impact on Argyll. The Fund is designed to fund up to 50% of appropriate marketing project costs over a one year period.

‘While the successful groups are to be congratulated for securing this finance at the moment the real benefit should come from the increased business that this activity generates in future years’.

The winning initiatives, so far, are;

  • Sail Scotland – awarded the maximum of £65,000. This will assist more than 60 organisations in highlighting the diversity of the country’s sailing and on-shore leisure activities with particular emphasis on attracting visitors from the UK, Eire, Scandinavia, Germany and France.
  • Holiday Mull & Iona – awarded £7,500> This will contribute to the cost of their website development at  and encourage autumn attractions at a time when there is off-peak capacity.
  • Bute Beyond 2000 – awarded  £4,550> This is to support their targeting of golfing visitors, including travel with CalMac, island accommodation and golf at Rothesay.
  • The West Coast Whisky Trail - awarded £19,745. The project involves 37 diverse businesses mostly, in Argyll, and the award will help to publicise the west coast whisky product and neighbouring attractions.
  • Oban & Lorn Tourism Association – awarded £ 20,021. This is towards online promotion and marketing initiatives driving off-season demand.
