And no, this is not a seance, it’s an entertainment, blending performed narrative with live music, taking place in the Burgh Hall in Dunoon on Sunday 6th December at 2.30pm – and the afternoon tea is real. You start with that.
Harry Lauder (1870-1950), born into humble circumstances, was one of Scotland’s most famous entertainers and a former Dunoon resident. At his peak he earned £,1200 a week in Britain and $5,000 in America, a huge amount at that time.
Sir Harry, played by professional actor Robert Howat, will be questioned on his eventful career in a ‘This is your life’ style interview by Kilmun-based writer Dave Dewar. His songs will be performed by Alan Reid of the internationally renowned Scottish music group The Battlefield Band.
The event will begin with afternoon tea, coffee and home baking, followed by a brief concert of folk music performed by Alan Reid and a musical colleague Rob van Sante. Then Harry Lauder will take the stage. The successes and personal tragedies of the entertainer’s life will be revealed, interspersed by some of Harry’s humour.
Part of the proceeds of this event will go to the continuing restoration of Dunoon Burgh Hall.
To book a ticket (cost £7 and including afternoon tea):
- phone Dave Dewar on 01369 840404
- email him at: dave@cultural-connections.co.uk
- or visit Bells Outfitters in Argyll Street, Dunoon.
