SAMS is partner in new £75m Marine Alliance for Science & Technology for Scotland

Today (5th November) saw the launch of a new body bringing together 8 Scottish Universities in research and training in marine sciences.

The Marine Alliance for Science & Technology for Scotland has been established after the granting of an additional £17.4 million by the Scottish Funding Council, bringing the total available to £74.7 million.

The heart of the new body will be a graduate academy supported by the creation of 8 new professorships an 13 new lectureships.

The focus of the work of the Marine Alliance will be on developing innovative solutions for maximising the benefits we can harvest from the richness and diversity of Scotland’s seas and for doing so sustainably.

At the launch of the new body, Richard Lochhead, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Fisheries, said: ‘It’s clear that our leading research institutions have a vital role to play in placing Scotland at the forefront of international marine research’.

One of the eight leading research institutions in this field who are partners in the Marine Alliance is the Scottish Association of Marine Sciences (SAMS) at Dunstaffnage, part of the University of the Highlands & Islands Millennium Institute.

The other 7 partners are: University of Aberdeen; Fisheries Research Services; University of Glasgow; Heriot-Watt University; Edinburgh Napier University; University of St Andrews; University of Stirling; University of Strathclyde; University Marine Biological Station at Millport, Great Cumbrae.
