I found the BBC's WW11 Peoples War website. That site led me onto the RNVR site and I saw the entry about Anthony Michael Fahy who died aged only 19 when he was torpedoed on the HMS Bluebell, and about whom Tish Dolan speaks above. I have been to sea there on one of my family trawlers, its a wild and fearsome place and I stopped tonight for a moment and thought about that young man and the thousands like him who died so that we could have freedom. To all the people who are still alive and who experienced WW11, and to their families and friends, and to the type of person who writes on this site, I want you to know that there are and always will be people like me from younger generations who understand and are humbled by the sacrifice that that generation made. I shall be saying a prayer for all those who have gone and all those who remain. I try to bear in mind the lifetime we have and the choices available to us were bought by the blood of that generation and to live with decency. Michael Anthony Fahy on HMS Bluebell in February 1945. What sorrow it must have brought his parents, Dermot and Monica Rosa Fahy. I have a photograph of their wedding in the early 1920's in Dublin, my mother was a bridesmaid. I also discovered the death of his cousin Charles Paul Stacpoole O'Longan in June 1918 in the Royal Flying Corps. He was unbelievably brave. They were both so young. What a sacrifice for 'small nations' and the democracy that we take for granted. I will wear the Poppy proudly from now on. Lord have Mercy on their Souls.
