This could be the most significant development on Islay since the construction of the original planned village at Bowmore in the 1770s. The Shoreline Project is inviting Ileachs living in and around Bowmore to participate energetically in its public consultation.

Urban Animation and Neil Sutherland Architects have been appointed by Islay Estates to masterplan new developments at the western edge of the town.

The Shoreline Project is aimed at providing a mixed use development – with housing, retail, hotel,  community, heritage / tourism and business uses.

In a planned town like Bowmore, with its logic, proportion and scale,  the challenge will be to integrate the new development with the existing settlement. It will have to respect the historic street pattern and architecture while creating a development which is of its time. The area that is the focus of the project can be identified on the map below.

As a first step, local residents are being asked how they would like to see the development take shape. Richard Heggie, Director of Urban Animation says: ‘The Shoreline Project is focused on Bowmore but may also be of interest to those living or working
outside the village.

  • What employment opportunities can it bring?
  • Can it provide for an enhanced visitor experience?
  • Can it add to the justification for improved ferry routes and timetables?
  • Can it help to provide affordable housing for local people and encourage them to continue living on Islay?

This is a chance for all Ileachs to make their views known’.

The main consultation sessions are open to all. They will be held at the Council’s Service Point, Jamieson Street, Bowmore from 10.30am-12.30pm on Friday 27 November and from 10am-12.30pm and 1.30pm-4.30pm on Saturday 28th November.

In an interesting development and one which should reverberate into eventual public use of the new facilities, there will also be a session at the High School on Friday 27th November with 5th and 6th year students. They will take part in a discussion exploring factors which should shape developments at the Project site and how it can relate to the existing village. The school session will not be open to the public.

Following the consultation sessions, work will then begin on draft development proposals for the Shoreline site. The draft development proposals for the Shoreline site will be submitted to the Council in early 2010 as a first step towards inclusion in the forthcoming Local Development Plan for Argyll and Bute.

There will be comment forms available at the consultation sessions and everyone who attends will be asked to complete one.

Anyone unable to attend one of the sessions can comment by visiting the Urban Animation website and using the email link on the Shoreline Project Page to submit views.

Written comments can be sent to Urban Animation, 22 Westhall Gardens, Edinburgh, EH10 4JQ.

Questions relating to the consultation sessions should be directed to Urban Animation via its website’s Bowmore Shoreline Project page, or by telephoning 0131 477 0676.
