Not the Kon-tiki expedition (well, not unless some bright spark lifts the anchors) but a raft trip to remember all the same – Maersk Line, owners of the 6 ships currently rafted in cold lay-up in Loch Striven, have invited the local community to vsit Maersk Beaumont on Friday.
This will involve a tour of the ship and a reception on the bridge.
Captain David Johnstone will be the company’s host and Maersk has invited the people who live around Loch Striven and representatives from Rothesay.
So far they’ve had an excellent response from people who are pleased to have been invited and are interested in visitng the raft on the loch.
The company’s spokesperson says: ‘We’ve even had comments that this is a ‘wonderful way to meet the neighbours’. We’re delighted that we can contribute positively to the local area and we’re really looking forward to meeting everyone on Friday’.
This is a significant gesture of recognition that the Loch Striven community is part of the equation around the recession-dictated presence of the Maersk ships on their doorsteps.
The local community will respect that as well as welcome it.
For Argyll sees this as a necessarily positive and inclusive move – and an exemplary one – which is in line with Maersk’s general reputation for corporate special responsibility.
This has the capacity to build a constructive relationship between two communities who are equally prisoners of the situation – those on shore and those on board the raft.
And we’ll be there, also by invitation, and will report afterwards.

Well done to Maersk, who obviously have a much clearer idea of what Community relations is all about than Clydeport. One has to ask, will Mrs Margaret Mackay be in attendance ?
