You get two great international trios for the price of one – musicians from Scotland, USA, Sweden and Denmark join forces for a great afternoon out.at FiddleFolk’s last international concert of the year at Strachur,

Mairi CampbellMairi Campbell (left) on fiddle & vocals has picked up a tranch of awards She was awarded ‘Scots Singer of the Year’ at the BBC Scots Trad Music Awards, and ‘Female Musician of the Year’ and ‘Composition of the Year’ at the Live Ireland Awards. She now performs special tour of Scotland. with cellist Abby Newton and Celtic harpist Kim Robertson from the USA.

They perform the vibrant folk music of Scotland and of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, where Scottish Highland music has continued in a living tradition since the 18th century. From poignant airs to high-spirited strathspeys and reels, their dynamic arrangements unleash both the subtle beauty and rhythmic energy of this timeless music. ‘The music they play can range effortlessly from achingly beautiful to simply breathtaking. And they have such a good time doing it!’

Mairi Campbell has been a well established singer/songwriter and fiddler for some years in the traditional music world, but her voice has been heard recently by millions who would not previously have known of her – as the voice of Auld Lang Syne in the ‘Sex and the City’ feature film. Mairi Campbell’s voice is one of the great sounds of Scottish folk music today, as a fine interpreter of the songs of Robert Burns as well as more contemporary Scottish material.

Abby Newton Kim RobertsonAbby Newton (left) is a cellist of unusual versatility and has composed cello parts for over fifty recordings by a variety of folk artists on both sides of the Atlantic, including Scottish singer, Jean Redpath, and has made it her mission to re-establish the cello in traditional Scottish music. Kim Robertson (right) is a pioneer in the American folk harp movement and combines an improvisational spirit with a passionate sense of tradition, bringing a contemporary touch to a centuries old instrument.

Habbadam (pictured top), a young trio from Sweden and Demark have a unique sound, combining guitar, fiddle and soprano sax. Their first trip to Scotland was at the Edinburgh Fiddle Festival last year. Box and Fiddle in their review of the weekend said: ‘A great find for me was ‘Habbadam’, who recently won the Danish Folk Music Debut of the Year. A unique blend of old and new, this young group had a stage presence well beyond their years, and could well trigger an interest in a style of playing not well known on these shores. The combination of fiddle, guitar and sopranosax gives the tradition and bite and a swing rarely expected of traditional music.’

This is the last concert this year in the Lochgoilhead Fiddle Workshop’s and Fiddle Folk’s  Hands Across the Seas series, supported by the Scottish Arts Council.

The concert is on Sunday 15th November at 3.00 pm Strachur Memorial Hall. More information can be found at Lochgoilhead Fiddle Workshop.
