In 2007, the now 44 year-old Moira Cameron, from Furnace in Mid Argyll became the first woman Beefeater in history. She remains the only woman in a team of 35 Beefeaters.

It was announced today that 2 male Beefeaters at the Tower of London have been suspended and a 3rd is under investigation over allegations of bullying Ms Cameron.

The authorities at the Tower have said that they are taking the allegations very seriously, saying that their policy is that: ‘everyone is entitled to work in an environment free from any form of harassment’; and that this is: ‘a principle that we expect all our staff to value and uphold’.

One of the two suspended Beefeaters – the basic qualification is the completion of no fewer than 22 years of service in the army – is also now under caution for inappropriate use of the Internet.

The investigation of the bullying allegations is expected to last for up to 3 weeks.
