Stuart Liddell, now the effective world champion solo piper after winning The Glenfiddich 2009 Solo Piping Championships last Saturday, is on a roll.

Yesterday he won the Bratach Gorm – the blue banner, in the Open Piobaireachd competition organized by the Scottish Piping Society of London.

Stuart’s winning the Bratach Gorm gives him a double guarantee of an invitation to the 2010 Glenfiddich Championship. As this year’s winner, he will automatically defend his position. And now the Bratach Gorm also carries an invitation to compete for The Glenfiddich

In a rarely seen double victory – Stuart also won the Gillies Cup Open Piobaireachd and won the Hornpipe & Jig.

Willie McCallum from Campbeltown, now of Bearsden and a member of the Scottish Power Grade 1 pipe band, came 4th to Stuart Liddell in both the Bratach Gorm and the Gillies Cup. However, Willie took the London Medallion March, Strathspey & Reel and came 2nd in the JB Robertson March, with Liddell behind him in 4th place.

Today, Remembrance Sunday, as with all of Argyll’s pipe bands, Inveraray & District – whose Pipe Major is Stuart Liddell – had its two bands – the Grade 1 band and the Novice band (under Pipe Major Robert Stewart) – playing at parades in Inveraray, Furnace and at the Argyll Caravan Park, formerly HMS Quebec.
