A timely documentary: BBC Alba looks at the life of Army wives

In an international documentary – Soillse/Nomad’s Land - to be transmitted by Gaelic channel, BBC ALBA, at 9.00pm on Wednesday 9th December.

The film gives a voice to military wives and while its focus is on the wives of Canadian military personnel, these women remind us of the situation of military wives the world over.

They are not members of the military yet the army runs their lives – forcing them to move repeatedly and subjecting them to trying separations. These circumstances often leave them feeling isolated and vulnerable.

And this does not even get close to the condition of British army wives today, with the cargo planes from Afghanistan decanting servicemen’s coffins at RAF Lyneham with monotonous regularity.

Other people’s lives are always interesting and instructive. This programme lets us into unsung lives lived quietly and under unusual restrictions and strains.
