The Tim Kliphuis Trio galvanised an audience of close on 100 in Lochgilphead Parish Church on Saturday night (24th October).

Wonderfully backed up by Nigel Clark (guitar) and Roy Percy (double bass), Tim led the Trio in a fascinating selection of numbers, ranging from Gershwin’s Lady Be Good to Django Reinhardt’s Fleche d’Or; from A Nightingale sang in Berkeley Square to a very sensitive Skye Boat Song.

The main focus of the Trio’s performance, however, was their unique fusion of Grappelli’s gypsy jazz with classical and folk themes, bringing in exquisite harmonies and countermelodies.

The interplay between instruments was at times dazzling, and in turn Handel, Grieg, Tchaikovsky and Pachelbel were treated in this manner – different and at all times with shining integrity.

This was a wonderful evening of music, with three virtuoso players combining perfectly in scintillating modern jazz.
