Oban-Lismore ferry comes close to stranding

It has emerged that last weekend the MV Eigg, the ferry from Oban to Lismore, with 15 passengers on board, came close to stranding.

A regular passenger on the route noticed that the ferry had gone way off course and was getting dangerously close – around 40ft off the mainland shore near Benderloch, opposite Lismore.

The woman notified the ticket-office  crew who ran up the ladder to the Wheel House. After this, the boat came to a stop, turned and headed for Lismore. Passengers were given no explanation for the incident.

Ferry operators, Caldonian MacBrayne, are investigating the matter and the Captain of the MV Eigg, James MacLean from North Connel, has been suspended from duty until this investigation is complete. He was given a routine breath test which proved negative.

  1. Is it just me or does anybody else find it unbelievable that the captain concerned has now been reinstated on this route? What does that say about Celedonian MacBrayne and their attitude to sfaety, the islanders and other ferry users?

  2. The reinstatement of the skipper is beyond belief. I would have thought that a demotion would have been the best outcome he could have hoped for, given that so many peoples lives were put at risk by his actions. I am amazed that the MCA have not revoked his boat-master’s license. There can be few islanders on Lismore who have any confidence in his ability to transport them safely across the water any more.

  3. Why so surprised !
Calmac have been treating it’s customers and the communitties they serve has 2nd class citizens for years. Canne get any one else for the wages they pay.
The more important question is ‘why did the ferry go so far off coruse in the first place ?’. Had the Captain fallen asleep, did the boat have fault, why ?
