If an apple a day keeps the doctor away – what do 100 varieties of Apple in a day do?LORN Markets (Local Origin Rural Network) is hosting the Argyll Apple Day at its Autumn Fayre on Thursday 15th October from 10.00am-3.00pm at Kintaline Farm outside Benderloch (follow the signs).
And the Big Apple will be there in person. John Hancock of the Commonwealth Orchard project – also Director of the Children’s Orchard, will be present as part of his Fruitful Scotland tour.
The basic aim of the Commonwealth Orchard initiative is to build more fruitful communities by growing and eating local fruit together. Children and adults alike learn the skills of growing apples and are encouraged to plant communal apple trees.
Where? There are school grounds, parks, waste ground, gap sites, along side roads and canals – indeed anywhere that land is available and local communities decide to use it in this way. Call it Guerrilla Kitchen Gardening.
John Hancock will be bringing the Scottish Apple Collection of over 100 varieties for visitors to find out more about. He also wants children to bring along clean apples growing in their own place – and find out what varieties they are.
He also has a Fruit Press and – this is where it gets tasty – he’d love young people and adults alike to bring him clean apples from your trees to make into juice on the day. It needs at least 300 apples to get it going so start gathering and washing.
Please contact Jill on 01631 720223 if you can contribute some apples.
John Hancock is very keen to find out all about any trees growing in the area. He’ll be assisted by experienced growers who can help with any tree growing problems and ideas.
So come to the LORN Market to let John know what you are growing. Find out more about the varieties you might possibly grow. Drink juice from your own apples and seed some ideas.
