At the SNP Conference in Inverness over the weekend, Richard Lochhead, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Fisheries, made the case for decision-making on fisheries policy to be returned to Scotland. 70% of UK fishing quotas are held here.
Mr Lochhead also told of an incident betraying the level of petty politics emanating from Downing Street.
Hae recently visited the European Agriculture and Fisheries Council. During the meeting, the UK Minister had to leave early – itself an indication of the priority Westminster gives to the issues. Lochhead – and any objective judgment, would have expected the seat being vacated to be given to a Scottish Minister.
But no. On what are allegedly orders form Downing Street, the departing Minister asked one of his civil servants to take his seat.
As Lochhead put it: ‘So we had two civil servants at the top table, neither of whom would be able to point to Peterhead, Lerwick, Kirkwall, Stornoway, Eyemouth or any other fishing port on a map’.

Richard Lochhead MSP for Moray is a hard working member of the Scottish Parliament. All you do is write bile, this does nothing to further your right wing anti Scottish cause. Even though you do not support the SNP, the fact you are comfortable with an elected Scottish member being treated so badly regardless of party loyalty is just not right. I have voted Lib Dem all my life up to Jim Mather’s election and I know that this is not right, don’t know were you are coming from?
Richard was next in seniority at that meeting but not in eyes of London and this is why it is time for Scotland to stand on its own.
