Argyll’s Anne Lorne Gillies to be Gaelic Ambassador of the Year

Culture Minister, Michael Russell, speaking in Oban tonight at the opening of the 2009 Royal National MOD,  announced that Argyll’s Anne Lorne Gillies would be this year’s Scottish Government Gaelic Ambassador of the Year.

Mr Russell said: ‘A long time Gaelic activist, Anne’s contribution to Gaelic language and culture is immense. Her more recent work on the songs and music of St. Kilda has kept her at the forefront of current Gaelic activity and language promotion and makes her a truly worthy recipient’.

Anne Lorne Gillies – a renowed Gaelic singer, taking her first MOD Gold Medal at the age of 17 – was raised in Argyll as Anne Gillies.

When she was recruited to join the BBC in 1971 and joined the stage union, Equity, she funf that there already was an Anne Gillies on the Union’s books. She therefore had to adopt a different name and decided to add ‘Lorne’ as her middle name, in tribute to the area of Argyll where she was brought up
