What they call ‘the best rally in the world’ has its 40th anniversary on the Isle of Mull this weekend. The 2300 Club’s Tour of Mull car rally runs from 9th – 11th October.
It’s a 144 mile route, with 17 stages including the revival of the short Tobermory town stage last seen in the millennium rally.
Paul MacKinnon, winner of the 2008 rally will have the honour of leading off on Friday night at the start in Tobermory with Ewen MacGillivray in place of long time co-driving partner, Daniel Barritt.
The excellent Tour of Mull website has a great preview by Ross Williams listing the main contenders, many familiar to the event’s afionados.
As we said last year, this event makes F1 drivers look like a rack of big girls’ blouses. The skills, the timing, the nerve, the roar of the engines, the smell of the rubber, the grind of the prangs, the night challenges, the time trials – this really does have the lot. Great spectator sport. Very well organised. One of those ‘Be There’ imperatives.
Be warned – caravans and campervans may not use the site at the beautiful Calgary Bay.
All practical information is on the event’s website, including the information on associated road closures that residents and non-rally visitors moving around the island need to know.
