2009 Tiree Wave classic gets airborne

2009 Tiree Wave Classic

This Saturday morning (10th October) was the official start of the UK’s spectacular annual premier windsurfing event.

Over  50 surfers registered for this year’s event to battle it out for one of the most sought-after prizes in world windsurfing – or wavesailing.

The sunshine island of Tiree delivered for the Classic today. The sun is shining for the first rounds of official competition and the wind and waves were perfect for a full round of Amateurs, Masters and Ladies competitions.

Tiree is known well by the windsurfing elite for waves and lots of wind, and that is exactly what is hoped for as the Tiree Wave Classic, kicks off today.

In preparation for the competition, some of the world’s best windsurfers have been on the island for the last few days, enjoying warming up (sorry – you know that’s not exactly what we mean in these climes) in some spectacular conditions.

Gordon Scott of The Isle of Tiree Diary says yesterday was ‘blowing a hoolie’.

And by the way, we can assure you that the figure photographed above, divorcing his sailboard, is not Wiliam Angus Maclean of Tiree’s Wild Diamond – whom you can read about (as linked )in our recent feature, now our top story.

(And just because its a great pic – you can see it again – bigger.)
